There are many reasons why you may ditch the gym gear and take a break from exercise. It could be having a baby, a hectic work schedule, an injury or just simply losing interest in exercise.
It can be pretty daunting getting back into exercise after a long break, however it doesn’t need to be if you follow these simple tips.
Ease yourself back in
Easing your way back into exercise slowly, is definitely the safest option for your body. This way you are less likely to injure yourself, or be too sore after your workouts. Doing too much too soon could put your body under stress. A good starting point would be walking or some yoga, as this will help with your flexibility.
Exercise with a friend
Exercising with a friend will help you to stay motivated, as you can hold each other accountable. You could go for a walk on your lunch break with a work colleague. Or meet a friend first thing in the morning for a short bike ride. You are bound to have more fun working out with a friend!
Book it in your diary
At the start of each week, look at your diary and allocate some time each day for exercise. Book it in at the time of day that you are least likely to skip it. Exercising in the morning is a really good place to start, as you will have your exercise done before you go about your day. Some days you may have a crazy schedule, on those days you can just book in a quick 15 minute workout, HIIT is a great option. It’s better to a little bit of exercise than nothing at all!
If you do a type of exercise that you find enjoyable and fun, this will ensure that you keep going back for more! And remember to mix it up. Keep it interesting by trying different types of exercise, different types of classes, and maybe even enter a fun run or an event that you can work up to, and progress towards. If you are having fun, exercise will become part of your daily ritual.
